CHENNAI: Creches and day care centres are not only for kids. Busy executives and working couples in Chennai can now make use of similar facilities to care for their elderly relatives while they are away at work.Aikya Care, a creche designed and conceived for the needs of senior citizens, is coming up in Thiruvanmiyur. The brainchild of IIM graduate Srividya Viswanathan, this 2200-sq-ft centre aims to keep the elderly engaged in activities of their choice for a few hours during the day.
"Senior citizens today do not enjoy the social, emotional support that their ancestors used to. And one can't entirely blame their children as they have their own set of priorities and challenges to meet. What we need therefore is a set of new support systems that will help the elderly cope with a changing social fabric," says Srividya. But in a city that has the highest proportion of elderly people among all the metros in the country, the idea has evoked a mixed response. While some have welcomed it, others see it as the first step to consigning the elderly to old age homes.
